CONTROVERSEY CONTINUES...
Here is the essence of the continuing controversey: Did the class pay too much money for the TV with the
excess funds going into a secret "slush" fund to elect Gordon Bartlett as ASB President. Would this become
the model used by President Reagan to fund the Contras? The evil inspiration of Enron? Now, in these times
of 64" LCD HD TV, an old tube TV hardly seems the stuff of controversey. However, as some have said, it is
not what was done as it is the principal. Yes, a pun was intended. Wayne continues to deny any wrong doing
and said he was for giving the TV before he was against giving the TV. Yes, we know politicians talk like
that even in high school. Gordon Bartlett when contacted had "no comment". Have you ever known Gordon not
to comment - about anything. One can only imagine what might have happened in 1956 that would keep Gordon
silent.

Crusing the valley ...

If you stayed long enough you would meet everyone under the age of 20 in the
Pomona Valley.
Eighteen cents for a hamburger and twenty five cents for gas...
Now for upscale hanging out there was only one place...Henry's. On weekends there were more laps
around this place than the Indy 500.
Look at that classy interior...
Girls game from as far away as...Ontario ...
There was more than one way to hang out
The code of honor was to get in free ... So, Bob Bertleson...How many did you you get in free with
your 49 Olds convertible?

All that cruising could cause a thirst...but at 17 there could be some long dry spells...
Then, of course, sometimes you wanted to get away to some quiet spot.
Oh, for some this night rendering might be more memorable...
Some places did not have photos available but certainly deserved mentioning: Stinky's, Mateo's Pizza, Lloyds come to mind.
Thanks to Heidi for the use of the book, Cruising the Pomona Valley by Charles Phoenix from which the photos were taken.
Jim Drinker took his date to dinner here
before the Prom when we were Juniors. Yes, he did pay for her dinner. Then, the Magic Lamp was
new - and so were we in 1956.
The Prom theme was "Stairway to the Stars". Hal Lomen and his band played for us that night. (It's rumored that the group went on to considerable acclaim in Liechtenstein) It probably doesn't get much better than a slow dance to "moon glow" or "my prayer".
